Prince Albert of Saxony has died

Credit:  The Associated Press
Prince Albert of Saxony, younger brother of the late Margrave of Meissen, died in Munich on October 6 after a long illness.

He was 78 years old, and he "passed away peacefully" in a Munich hospital.

A historian and author, Prince Albert challenged the succession of his nephew, Prince Alexander, to the headship of the Wettin family, in spite of the fact that he and his wife, Elmira, signed the family pact that designated Alexander as the heir.

Albert's older brother, Prince Max Emanuel, Margrave of Meissen, died in July.

Prince Albert's marriage was morganatic.  He did not have any children.

Prince Albert of Saxony was the last grandson of King Friedrich August III of Saxony, the last king of Saxony.

Sad - three siblings in the one year. Also, I was wondering if you knew which side the surviving siblings are on in "The War of the Saxon Succession". I know that Maria Emanuel's widow is on Alexander's side and that Albert's widow is presumably on Ruediger's, but I don't know about Maria Josepha or Mathilde.

All the siblings signed the family pact. Mathilde's son, Johannes, was the Margrave's heir until he was killed in an accident.
