Royal death: Prince Peter of Montenegro

Prince Peter of Montenegro, brother of Queen Elena of Italy, died this morning, according to the Associated Press.  He was 42 years old.

Prince Peter was born at Cetinje on October 10, 1889.  He was the youngest son of Nicholas I of Montenegro and his wife, Milena Vukotic. His godparents were Russian Emperor Alexander III and the Duchess of Edinburgh, who was born Grand Duchess Marie Alexandrovna of Russia.

He was once considered as a possible candidate as king of Albania, but the job went to  Wilhelm of Wied.

During the first world war, Prince Peter served in the Montenegrin army.  After Peter surrendered Lovcen to Austria in 1916, the war changed dramatically for Montenegro.  Prince Peter and his family left the country for Italy, and then to exile in France.

Prince Peter died at Merano, Italy.  He is survived by his wife, Violet, whom he met in Paris.  They were introduced the bedside of a dying mutual friend. 

Violet Emily Wegner performed in Paris' music halls.  They were married in Paris on April 29, 1924.  The couple had no children.
